Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams’s recent trip to Singapore and Hong Kong brought her more than just another trip to the finals—being in the faraway cities gave her some new inspiration for her athletic apparel line, EleVen. “The area has a rich and vibrant culture,” Williams says. “After each trip, I leave inspired to sketch new prints and designs.” And both packing and playing, it seems, gets a bit more fun when you’re designing for yourself. “I stowed away outfits from my latest collection, Primitive Dots, to wear on the court,” she says. “My favorite look of the tournament was at the finals, when I wore the cobalt blue tank with an asymmetric wrap skirt that has the best print. I love it because it’s both feminine and strong.”
Also strong: Williams’s when-in-Rome attitude when it comes to taking in the sights and eating her way through foreign cities. “When I travel, I try to experience as much of the local cuisine as possible, and this trip was no exception. I ate a lot of traditional Chinese and also some modern Asian fusion. When I’m abroad, I feel food is the best way to immerse yourself in the country’s culture.”
