J Balvin, Colombia’s Talented Gift to the World

As the only Colombian on the Rolling Stone Korea team, I find it surreal to welcome one of the foremost representatives of contemporary Colombian culture to my second home, Seoul. J Balvin is not only a remarkable musical talent but also a pioneer in reshaping Colombia’s global image—an image that embodies respect, positive energy, art, culture, and beauty. Most notably, it reflects the rebirth we have been fostering with our inherent resilience. Today, we celebrate the arrival of the “unicorn of reggaeton,” the son of Alba Mery Balvin and Alvaro Osorio: Mr. José Alvaro Osorio Balvin, better known as J Balvin.

For the first time in the history of reggaeton and its global expansion, Seoul welcomes the most significant exponent of this genre. J Balvin is leading  the opening of  the Latin music market in Asia with his visit to the South Korean capital. While this is not his first engagement with Asian cultures, it marks his inaugural visit to Seoul. We had the honor of hosting him at the RSK studios, where he became the first Latin American artist to be featured on the cover of the world-renowned cultural magazine’s South Korea edition.

José’s unique blend of quality and personal warmth has always been at the heart of his global appeal, a trait that has remained constant despite the challenges he has faced throughout his career. From the very beginning, his journey has been marked by complex situations, all of which he has navigated with wisdom and a spiritual approach that has become integral to his lifestyle. This mindset has been key to his success.

Born in Medellín, Colombia, and with over 20 years in the entertainment industry, J Balvin has built a career by breaking stereotypes and embracing an authenticity that has propelled him to remarkable success—success that many once considered unattainable. His diverse collaborations stand as a testament to this: from recording Wherever I May Roam with Metallica for The Metallica Blacklist in 2012, to being featured in children’s films like SpongeBob SquarePants, J Balvin has continually expanded his artistic horizons. Today, he is also a sought-after ambassador for luxury fashion brands, solidifying his place as a global icon known for both his artistic and cultural influence.
